Former Ukrainian Defense Minister Calls for Elections Amid Ongoing War
Mikhail Fedorov urges establishment of a legal and safe mechanism to hold elections despite the conflict.
Former Ukrainian Defense Minister Mikhail Fedorov has called for elections to be held in Ukraine even as the war continues, emphasizing the need to find a lawful and secure way to conduct them. "Complexity does not mean impossibility," he stated.
Challenges and Necessity of Elections During Conflict
In a video message posted on his YouTube channel on August 18, Fedorov stressed the importance of not allowing the ongoing war to dictate when Ukrainians can exercise their right to choose their government. "If the war continues for another year, two, or three, can Russia really have the right to decide when Ukrainians will again be able to elect their leaders? I am convinced it cannot. Democracy cannot be held hostage by Russia," he asserted.
Fedorov acknowledged the logistical and security challenges in reinstating a full democratic process under such conditions. These include ensuring voting rights for military personnel, Ukrainians abroad, and residents in frontline regions. He also highlighted the critical role of independent institutions and public trust in the election outcomes. "But complexity does not mean impossibility. Ukraine has repeatedly achieved what the world deemed impossible," he underscored.

Fedorov additionally warned against the dangerous trend where appointments are based on loyalty to the system rather than professionalism, results, or ability to effect change. He described this as a particularly risky development for society.
Mikhail Fedorov resigned as defense minister on July 15, citing disagreements with the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Alexander Syrsky. His resignation triggered protests in several Ukrainian cities, with demonstrators opposing President Volodymyr Zelensky's decision to accept Fedorov’s departure.
Protest participants praised Fedorov as one of the most effective ministers in recent years, crediting him with key reforms and modernization efforts within the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Some expressed dissatisfaction with current military management, linking their hopes for continued progress to Fedorov's leadership.
